I was born in Finland in 1991 but lived most of my life abroad (in South Africa and France). I returned to Finland to do the last three years of my high school education in the International Baccalaureate program (IB). The IB led me to use the internet on a daily (if not hourly) basis because of the huge workload. Ever since I did the IB I now spend more time online than asleep.

I use some form of technology, whether fixed or mobile, for most of my daily activities such as work, entertainment, communication and education. I have a great interest in technology and the internet in particular, I decided to study computer science in university after creating a simple website with study resources for IB students. I now aspire to create web based software for students as the internet is the single most useful tool for my education, and it will become more so for future students as technology is further integrated into schools and general society.

Life hasn’t been quite the same ever since we got our first computer together with a copper wire connecting it with millions of other computers.

I now use the internet every day mainly for educational, entertaining and informative purposes. During my life I have gained experience in different programming languages and multimedia development which the internet has been a valuable source of information for me.

I am also a sport dancer. Hours of practice, international competitions, tailcoats, dresses with vast amounts of hair spray (but enough about my weekends). All have been part of my favourite sport for the past eleven years.

I guess these fields have found a compromise in Sherlock Holmes – a great role model for any curious young scientist. As a hobby, I research the cultural history of medieval Tallinn and work as a tour guide in the summertime.

Being a young teacher of chemistry I am constantly expected to use traditional academic methods but also focus on practical laboratory assignments and IT. Together with my students I have learned to compile videos of chemical experiments, use various digital sensors and enjoy all the virtues of an “online text-book” in the form of my own homepage with various materials, tasks, revision questions and online tests, links etc. So far we have been rather successful in this and even won national competitions of young science fans. I suppose that substituting the chalk and the blackboard with a Vernier pH-sensor and a video-camera is inevitable, at least to some extent.
